We are just in the second week of 2019 and we already found one person to add in the long list of “Stupid Criminals.” A would-be thief from Brazil learned a lesson in a hard way, following a failed attempt of stealing from a professional mixed martial artist.
UFC strawweight newcomer Polyana Viana gave a robber the punishment he deserved after he tried to steal her cellphone in front of her apartment complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Brazilian fighter showed off her MMA skills, landing brutal punches and a kick before locking in a rear naked choke, to foil the man’s robbery attempt.
In an interview with Fernanda Pratas of MMA Junkie on Sunday, the strawweight fighter recalled what transpired Saturday night when a man with a gun tried to steal her cell phone while she was waiting for a ride in front of her apartment.
“When he saw I saw him, he sat next to me. He asked me the time, I said it, and I saw he wasn’t going to leave. So I already moved to put my cell phone in my waist. And then he said, ‘Give me the phone. Don’t try to react, because I’m armed.’ Then he put his hand over (a gun), but I realized it was too soft.”
Turning to her MMA skills, Viana fought back and threw solid punches and a kick, which sent the man down to the floor, before locking in a rear-naked choke.
“He was really close to me. So I thought, ‘If it’s a gun, he won’t have time to draw it.’ So I stood up. I threw two punches and a kick. He fell, then I caught him in a rear-naked choke. Then I sat him down in the same place we were before and said, ‘Now we’ll wait for the police.’”
The 27-year old did not suffer any injury from the incident but admitted that her hands were hurt. She also shared that after giving the suspect a solid beating, the man begged to let him go because he was scared to receive more punishment from the Brazilian fighter.
“I was fine. I was fine because he didn’t even react after. Since he took the punches very quickly, I think he was scared. So he didn’t react anymore. He told me to let him go, like ‘I just asked for the time.’ I said, ‘Asked for the time my ass,’ because he saw I was very angry. I said I wouldn’t let go and that I was going to call the police. He said, ‘Call the police, then’ because he was scared I was going to beat him up more.”
Later on, she found out that the robber’s weapon was fake but rather a cardboard paper cut in the shape of a gun. According to the police, it was not the first time the man was arrested for a criminal act.
Viana is competing in the UFC’s 115-lb division and is currently holding a 1-1 record in the promotion. She last fought at UFC 227 in August, where she lost a decision to J.J Aldrich. She won her UFC debut in February with a rear-naked choke.
