Serial drug test failing and former number one MMA fighter in the world, Jon Jones is making a third comeback to the sport. An older and hopefully sider Jones is set for a comeback fight and legitimate crack at the UFC Light Heavyweight title in December this year. Despite many critics being vocal about their disdain towards the 31-year-old American, he is being granted the opportunity to pick up essentially where he left off after being banned in 2017.
After winning the light heavyweight crown at UFC 214, blood samples taken after the fight tested positive for the steroid Turinabol. He was subsequently banned by both USADA and stripped of his title by the UFC, which was awarded to opponent Daniel Cormier. But now that Cormier has moved up a weight division to Heavyweight, the title is once again vacant, ready to be contested. He will match up for the second time against Alexander Gustafsson.
A fierce and crowd-pleasing fighter, many are excited to have him back in the octagon. He has only been dealt one loss in his entire professional career. That came nearly ten years ago when he dropped illegal elbows in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter. The clip below comes from around the same time when Jones appeared in the documentary The Proving Ground.
Jones is engaging in a hardcore sparring session during which he manages to pop his opponent, knocking him out. Jones shows compassion, kneeling down to check on him as he seems to be in a bad way. The sparring session held at Jackson’s MMA is overseen by head coach Greg Jackson, who is a real badass moment encourages Jones to Fight out the round with a new partner. “Jon, pop up, you gotta finish the round,” said Jackson.
